Multimedia Learning's Common Core Approach

Multimedia Learning embraces and supports the Common Core Standards for teaching the Social Studies standards. The effective integration of reading comprehension and writing skills into the study of history will lead to greater college preparedness and more responsible citizenry.

MULTIMEDIA LEARNING AND THE COMMON CORE

Multimedia Learning has based the enhanced, Common Core edition using the guidelines of the CSS-ELA standards set. Each presentation uses specific textual evidence for both embedded questions and lesson planning. Students are asked a higher level thinking skill questions to determine the central idea of a selection, identify key steps in a process, determine the meaning of words and phrases using context clues, explain the writer's point-of-view in a text or narrative, make conclusions based on visual information, distinguish between fact, fiction and opinion, and examine differences in primary and secondary source materials. Teachers may conveniently refer to the question list which not only lists the location in the presentation, but also identifies the Bloom's Taxonomy level of the question.

U.S. HISTORY PRESENTATIONS

Our Common Core edition embeds pop-up questions covering the range of Blooms Taxonomy of Learning Domains with emphasis on analyzing, evaluating, and creating. Typical questions ask students to analyze differences, evaluate decisions, consider alternatives and write summaries or conclusions. Many questions ask students to create their own questions, write topic sentences and provide explanations in their own words

LANGUAGE ARTS

Effective reading and writing skills are essential for responsible citizenship. Integrating language arts skills into our curriculum helps students make informed decisions on social issues and become more articulate future leaders. Our lessons open up learning through primary and secondary source materials written by the architects of our society such as Jefferson, Tubman, Roosevelt, King, and Chavez. We incorporate the Common Core Standards into our presentations and lessons to help teachers guide students through the complexity of issues using effective analysis and evaluation.

MATHEMATICS

Multimedia Learning has taken further initiative into the fundamental values of the Common Core by including numeric and graphical data into each presentation. Sample lessons and interrogative questions are included in each unit to help students analyze and evaluate complex social and economic issues. Multimedia Learning has done its own research into the concerns and questions associated with the Common Core Standards. All of our staff and writers are former teachers who believe that the study of history is essential to the development for tomorrows leaders. The integration of Language Arts and Mathematics will help all of our future leaders be better equipped to make decisions in an increasingly complex society.

SAMPLE LESSON PLANS

Our sample lesson plans combined rigorous lesson planning and the Common Core approach to account for every curricular minute in the classroom. Each lesson opens with a Do Now activity to bring students into a state of cognitive preparedness for learning. Next, the lesson activates students knowledge by defining the day's objectives by questioning students using the What, Why, and How technique. The Anticipatory Set is written as a short, media based learning activity to capture the attention of the entire class. Detailed Direct Instruction is designed to guide the teacher to deliver instruction to the entire class, with additional instruction for SPED and ESL students. Instructional Materials are provided for all suggested activities, from the Do Now to Exit Slips. Suggestions for guided practice techniques, proving behaviors, grading rubrics, answer keys, home work assignments and further recommendations for students with special needs are also given

EXAMPLES OF THE MML APPROACH

  • All pop-up questions are written as an appropriate learning domain for the subject material present.
  • In line with the Common Core Standards, many questions ask for a written response, such as to write a summarizing statement, to create your caption for an image, or to argue for or against the ideas presented in a slide.
  • MML presents all aspects of political situations so students may learn about historical events without bias. The embedded pop-up questions often challenge to internalize and express the issues in their own words.
  • MML draws from many primary sources, including political cartoons. Typical pop up questions include interpretation, write a caption, and explain the meaning.
